About the author

Joy Harjo

Joy Harjo is a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and served as the 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States — the first Native American to hold the post, and one of only a handful to serve three terms. A poet, saxophonist, and memoirist, she has published several collections of poetry alongside the memoir Crazy Brave. An American Sunrise returns to the Southeastern homelands her ancestors were forced from during Indian Removal, and to the family she traces back along that road.
