Raised in Tempe, Arizona, he holds a B.A. in journalism from the University of Colorado Boulder and an M.A. in Desert Studies from Prescott College, and has spent decades working as a river guide and field instructor across the deserts he writes about. He has published more than a dozen books of science, nature, and personal narrative, and his work has earned the Orion Book Award, the Colorado Book Award, and three Sigurd F.
